This necklace—which was another commission—started out as a grand experiment (as do so many of my craft projects). The pendant was made by following directions provided by metalsmith Chris Darway’s gold-on-copper CraftCast. High karat gold paste, a metal clay product, is painted on copper and allowed to dry. It’s torch-fired according to Darway’s directions. After I finished the pendant, I wasn’t sure the gold “took”, but after letting the disc lay around my studio for a while, I noticed it was much prettier than the other oxidizing copper discs. After finishing the disc (now given the grand title pendant) I added a handmade bail and some tourmaline beads my client brought back from a big gem show in Asheville, N.C. Happy, Happy.
