My hometown of Ft. Lauderdale FL (Wilton Manors FL to be exact) is so overbuilt and touristy that it easy to get grumpy and overlook the fact that here is a different and very tropical beauty. The increased number and diversity of people down here contribute to creativity and culture in ways that rural settings lack. For example, here is a yacht chandler’s wall which faces a very busy highway. Somebody–and I’m rarely going to check into back stories for these surprise art features–had the visual sense and the creativity to use sail-shaped canvas to advertise the business which services some of the mega$$-boats that seem to gravitate to this port city. Of course, without these “sails” the bare wall could have been used for graffiti which can be its own art form, but in this case Banksy will have to wait his turn. The yacht chandler advertises his/her business while drivers, walkers and bus riders get a treat. Looking for surprise art is a great way to pay attention to familiar surroundings. I plan to add more surprises as they crop up in my everyday life. As opposed to my virtual life…as opposed to my….you get the picture.

How observant! You’ve inspired me to look more carefully and attentively as I fight my way through Fort Lauderdale traffic. 😉
